Insulated Hot Tub Covers

Every Imperium hot tub cover is insulated by default with a high-density EPS foam core. Better heat retention means lower energy bills.

Why Insulation Matters

A hot tub heats water to around 100°F (38°C) and maintains that temperature 24/7. The cover is the single largest factor in how much energy that uses. An under-insulated or aging cover can double your hot tub’s electricity consumption.

Insulation in a hot tub cover comes from the foam core sandwiched between the vinyl/DuraTex exterior and the underside vapor barrier. The foam’s density and thickness determine its R-value (insulation rating).

What’s Inside an Imperium Cover

Every Imperium cover ships with a high-density EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam core as standard. EPS is the industry-standard insulator for spa covers because:

  • Strong R-value for its weight
  • Closed-cell structure resists water absorption
  • Holds shape under load
  • Doesn’t off-gas over time

Our standard taper is 5-to-3 inch (5 inch at the edge, 3 inch at the peak). For heavy-snow regions, we recommend the 6-to-4 inch taper which adds more insulation thickness and better snow shed.

The Role of the Vapor Barrier

Insulation only works if it stays dry. Once foam absorbs water (from steam rising off the spa or from snowmelt above), its R-value drops dramatically and it gets heavy.

Every Imperium cover includes a heat-sealed vapor barrier between the foam core and the underside vinyl. This barrier is what separates a cover that lasts 5+ years from one that gets waterlogged in 18 months.

Estimated Energy Impact

A properly insulated cover (premium foam, sealed vapor barrier, tight fit) can reduce hot tub heating costs by 30-50% versus a worn or under-insulated cover. For a typical hot tub at Ontario electricity rates, that’s roughly $200-$400 per year in savings.

A premium cover often pays for itself within 2-3 years just in reduced electricity use.
