Hot Tub Covers Built for Snow Load
Heavy snow regions need covers built to handle the weight. What snow load means, how to measure your region’s needs, and what Imperium offers.
Snow Load Is a Real Engineering Spec
Snow load is the weight that snow accumulates on a flat or near-flat surface. For hot tub covers, snow load matters because:
- Wet snow weighs around 15-20 lb/ft³
- A 7″ x 7″ spa cover can accumulate hundreds of pounds of snow before it’s cleared
- That weight stresses the foam core, the seams, and the perimeter skirt
- Repeated stress over winters causes cover failure: cracked foam, separated seams, torn vinyl
Where Snow Load Matters Most in Canada
Regions with consistently heavy snow accumulation should specifically consider snow load when buying a cover:
- Northern Ontario: Sudbury, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay
- Cottage country: Muskoka, Haliburton, Algoma
- Quebec interior: Saguenay, much of Eastern Townships, Laurentians
- Mountain towns: Banff, Canmore, Jasper, Whistler, Revelstoke, Kelowna interior
- Atlantic Canada: Newfoundland interior, parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
The 6-to-4 Inch Taper Option
Imperium’s standard taper is 5-to-3 inch (5 inch thick at the edge, tapering to 3 inch at the peak). This is sufficient for southern Ontario, southern Quebec, the Lower Mainland of BC, and southern Alberta.
For heavy-snow regions, we offer a 6-to-4 inch taper (6 inch thick at the edge, tapering to 4 inch at the peak). This adds insulation and provides a steeper slope for snow to shed naturally. Available as a custom build option.
Habits That Reduce Snow Stress
Even the best cover lasts longer with care:
- Clear snow within 24 hours when possible
- Use a soft broom (never a shovel or ice scraper)
- Don’t leave snow accumulated past mid-cover height
- Inspect the cover after major snow events for sagging or hinge stress
